About the area

Our glamping is located in the Parque Natural do Sudoeste Alentejano e Costa Vicentina,  that stretches from Sines in the north to Sagres in the extreme southwestern tip of the Algarve. You can make beautiful walks and mountain bike tours in the park, both along the rugged coast of southwestern Alentejo and through the surrounding hills. Construction is subject to strict rules, which means that you will hardly encounter any high-rise buildings and large complexes here.

Towns like Odemira, Santiago de Cacem and Sines are nice to walk through, but offer (except if there is a festival) not much entertainment. For this you better visit the coastal towns of Vila Nova de Milfontes, Porto Covo and Zambujeira do Mar.

If you also want to visit the Algarve, you can be in Lagos in one hour and 15 minutes, or in Albufeira in 1.5 hours.

A short walk from your tent through the hills with grain fields will take you to the typical Alentejan village of Troviscais, where you can drink a cup of delicious Portuguese coffee on the terrace of the local café, while the village men play a traditional game along the road, which looks a bit like boules.

A walk of a few kilometers in the other direction leads through eucalyptus forests to the Mira river, one of the cleanest rivers in Europe, in which many otters still live and which is full of fish.

Beaches

Of course you also come here for the beaches. The coast of the south Alentejo is rugged, high cliffs that hit the Atlantic Ocean. Hidden among the cliffs are small sheltered beaches, even in high season it is not difficult to find a quiet beach.

You have the choice of quiet beaches, without any buildings, so you have to take care of food and drink yourself. Or the busier beaches of the coastal towns, but even here busy is a relative concept.

For calmer bathing waters, the river beaches at the mouth of the Mira river at Vila Nova de Milfontes are ideal. Here you can play in the waves, or just lie on the beach and listen to the sounds of the sea.
In the spring, storks nest on the cliffs, from above you can see beautifully how they take care of their young.

The nearest beach is at Vila Nova de Milfontes, a 25-minute drive from here.

Culture

There is plenty to do in the cultural field, certainly in the summer season. Each village (also Troviscais) then has its 'festas', usually a procession followed by a dance evening. In Sines there is a world music festival every year, and Odemira regularly has open-air jazz nights.

You will find historical sites more inland. A nice day trip is the Roman excavation Mirobriga, near Santiago do Cacem.

Every year in July, in the town of Sao Teotonio (at 30 km), the Faceco takes place, the largest agriculture and livestock exhibition in Portugal. Definitely worth experiencing. With inspections, competitions, exhibitions of all kinds of old crafts and evening music.

If you want to shop, you better go to the Algarve. Coastal towns such as Zambujeira do Mar, Vila Nova de Milfontes and Porto Covo offer some cozy shops, but for real shopping you have to go to places like Lagos and Albufeira.

However, you don't have to go far for souvenirs. We are happy to help you with good addresses.

Joke

Peter and Joke found this amazing spot in a nature reserve while travelling through Portugal in 2008 and turned it into a B&B where they would have liked to stay themselves. With beautiful tents with a lot of privacy around each tent, a private bathroom and kitchen and all build and maintained with nature in mind. Since 2018 you can also enjoy our beautiful natural pool.
They live here with their 3 dogs, 4 cats and a few chickens for fresh eggs.

    Enjoyment!

After nine years, we went back to Peter and Joke at the "nature lodge". When getting out of the car you will come across the scent of the flowers and plants that grow there. It was already beautiful, only with the new natural pond (which is super beautifully made) you really feel like you are in paradise. Wake up in the background with the singing of many different birds. While enjoying a super tasty breakfast, which was brought every morning with fresh ingredients from your own garden and a self-baking, enjoy the view you dream of. If you love nature and really want to relax or enjoy the unspoilt nature and do not want to be knocked over by many other tourists, you have come to the right place. With all the praise for Peter & Joke! Our 6 year old son really didn't want to go home anymore ...

    Really recommended!

What a surprising discovery and special experience. Camping with comfort in a Yurt in a beautiful place surrounded by nature of Alentejo with lots of space and privacy. Beautiful whimsical cork trees in a hilly landscape setting and in the evening a beautiful starry sky. A wonderful place to unwind. Or head out to explore the rugged Atlantic coast with its beautiful bays and vistas along the long-distance "Fisherman’s Trail" hiking trail. Everything at a good travel distance. Delicious food in authentic and affordable restaurants in unexpected places. The population is friendly, there is no mass tourism in any way. The hospitable welcome, good information and care of the lovely owners Joke and Peter have certainly contributed to an unforgettable stay.

    Peaceful, gentle nature break

We had a magical week in Peter and Joke’s yurt in August. Weather was hot, but the yurt remained pretty cool and there are plenty of shady spots with covered areas, and cork oak trees everywhere. We are a family of nature lovers and our kids were in heaven, hunting through the undergrowth for crickets and praying mantises every day. We came prepared for mosquitos too but that was not really an issue, with a few candles at sunset only needed. The natural pool is idyllic - with a decent area for swimming and two nature areas which are teaming with even more wildlife to spot as well. It was buzzing with dragonflies and plenty of mini beasts, and we were all excited to see at least two water snakes (rather shy and not venomous!) appearing now and then. The pool house was an added bonus, with an honesty fridge for drinks, table football, and plenty of table space for a picnic near the pool or just to play games or read. My husband is a keen bird watcher - he was not disappointed either - we saw loads of bee eaters, booted eagle, short toed eagle, black winged kite, hoopoe, a pair of turtle doves and a couple of golden oriole even flew by. Evenings outside the yurt were so peaceful, gazing at the incredible stars while listening to cow bells, cicadas and owls... my 10 year old wanted to tape it to send him to sleep back at home. Peter and Joke are lovely - they helped us order a great family meal I advance, at the nearby cafe for the day we arrived. They also gave great advice on nearby beaches and quiet spots to explore that are a bit off the tourist trail. They even lent us some bunting to help celebrate our 5 year olds birthday! My only comments to advise others - if you have older, very active kids the pool might feel a bit small for them, we needed to keep food sealed in the kitchen area or ants would share it, you are a fair way from any shops, so bring your food in with you on day 1 if you can, and it’s a good walk up a hill to the nearest cafe or ice cream. These didn’t bother us in the least and we would definitely come again. Thank you to Peter and Joke x

Wonderful holiday on a unique glamping

We never actually go to the same destination twice, but we had to come back here again. The terrain of Joke and Peter is so beautiful with the old cork oaks, the wild flowers and the pond. The space and tranquility unique and the surroundings so beautiful that we wanted to experience that again. The natural swimming pool is an experience in itself! We were in the yurt with our children and they too had a great time again. The beaches and surroundings are beautiful, the food delicious and the people friendly. I would like to return soon!
